Firefly Lane: A story of true friendship

The literature is beautiful and diverse. It is a parallel world just like any other art form. It can come very close to reality and sometimes it is as if we can feel the rhythm of the author’s heartbeat. This is also the case with Kristin Hannah, the author of the beautiful book Firefly Lane.

The book is about two teenage girls, Tully and Kate . Both feel lonely and are convinced that the other is living a perfect life. They realize that this is not true when they begin to get to know each other better. In the book, something happens that makes one of the girls in a vulnerable moment make a shocking confession.

During this vulnerable moment , Tully can no longer handle the situation. She simply feels that she must stop protecting herself. She feels she must dare to trust someone, because if she does not, she is sure she will break. Kate is there for her and waiting for her (during the last year of high school, college and so on) so that Tully will not break down.

To make really close friends, you must dare to show yourself vulnerable. Sometimes you will be let down, because girls can be really mean to each other, but you can not let that stop you. If you get hurt, you have to pick yourself up, brush up on the bad feelings and try again.

The story of two friends

This story is about how the fear of rejection is slowly but surely replaced by curiosity, the desire to discover new things and to finally get out of one’s shell. It’s about the importance of challenging what you already know and about longing for the kind of love we see on film. Beyond the experience itself, it is what we do with the one that counts.

Kate has a loving but strict family. Tully is a star, but has been abandoned so many times by her mother that she has learned to shine on her own. In these two, we see the ambition that no teenager will ever admit to having. Namely, the desire to make their parents proud. Kate thinks Tully has everything and Tully thinks Kate has everything.

Thoughts and fears are formless creatures until you give them form by giving them a voice. And once you have given them a voice, they can crush you.

Two different worlds

Friendships arise when they realize that one is good at telling stories while the other is good at listening. Tully quickly realizes what she wants in life and how to achieve it. For Kate, it takes a little longer. While Kate finds hers, she follows Tully. She lifts her up when she’s down and when the past threatens to hurt her.

Both girls will try to overcome various obstacles on their way. Tully does it by becoming a TV star. Kate is loving and rewarding and understands that there are people who have been too hurt to be able to ask for forgiveness.

Tully is so strong that she catches everyone’s attention, while Kate’s courage makes her protect them all. In one way or another, Kate is the air that Tully breathes and Tully the air that Kate breathes. Living in two vastly different worlds allows them to help each other survive each other’s everyday lives.

Love and friendship

Firefly Lane is not a realistic novel, but that was never Kristin Hannah’s intention either. The novel does not try to reflect reality and the author knows full well that most friendships do not work this way. On the other hand, it is a beautiful dream, a well-told story about how things could have been if we had known what it took to find true friendship.

Perhaps one of the strongest elements of the book is its ability to portray what a mother or daughter feels in those moments when she realizes the dangers that threaten the other while completely ignoring the fact that she is approaching the fire.

Firefly Lane describes with admirable precision the ambivalence that exists in the fact that our security lies in what we often desperately try to get away from: our family.

We will not go further into the action in Firefly Lane as we do not want to ruin for those of you who have felt like reading the book. And it does not matter much that we do not fully describe the action. The most valuable thing about the book is how it tells the story of a friendship.

A little about the author

Something we have to acknowledge Kristin Hannah for is her ability to create two characters and make them develop before our eyes. This is something we see in Kate who learns to be the best mom she can be. Kristin Hannah shows us through her daughter’s actions what hurts Kate the most, but also what comforts, upsets and excites her.

There are many reasons why Firefly Lane is a fantastic book. We strongly encourage you to discover them on your own.

A few words from the editor: Firefly Lane is not just a book for teens. It is a book for everyone. Adolescence is just the starting point on the exciting path these two characters must walk together.
