Attitudes Are Contagious: Surround Yourself With People Who Bring Out The Best In You

Attitudes are contagious: Surround yourself with people who bring out the best in you

If your attitude is the most important thing you have on you, then make sure that no one takes your hopes and dreams and calls them “impossible”. Do not let them undermine your desires by making you believe that you are not worth it, that you can not do it, or that you do not deserve it. Our attitude has so much power over what happens in our lives. So just do not do it, do not let them steal your most beautiful garment: your attitude.

Self-help books focus on success. They turn our attention to external victories, to being recognized for our values, skills and abilities. Now we have something to say about this: We are not trying to achieve “external success”, but rather inner peace.

We always gain new skills, and that’s good. Proving that we are good at something is very gratifying, we can not deny it. But what really matters is your attitude, because it’s what makes the difference between a good day and a bad day.

It is the one that gives us the opportunity to be optimistic when everything is against us. It is the one that allows us to believe in ourselves when other people try to shrink us and make us small.

“I AM worth it, I KNOW how to do it, and I DESERVE it.” These are the three affirmations we should use to feed our attitude every single day. The attitude we should start the day with is as important as our coffee and our sandwich.

However, there are times when the negative, defeatist or even toxic mentalities of some of the people around us can definitely affect this sunny perspective and make it stormy.

Your Attitude: A Personal Decision

The number of books published on happiness and personal growth doubles every year. But the WHO is already warning us that sooner than we think, depression will be the world’s first health and disability problem worldwide.

So, because of this, let’s continue and educate our children to be good at science, math, technology and computer programming. But we should also not forget to teach them how to deal with frustration, how to deal with their emotions, their anger, their sadness…

Nobody really talks about attitudes, or how to do that “believe in yourself” thing. We do not know how because the only thing they taught us in school was how to identify the subject and predicate of a sentence or find the smallest common denominator. We have been taught to be good, respectful, and to get high grades, and then happiness will only appear.

But sooner or later we find that our good intentions are not enough to succeed. We realize that if others do not believe in us, our fire goes out like a candle blown out by a cold wind.

Society can give us a good education, but it also holds us back by putting us in an isolated waiting room. We wait there with other waiting people who infect us with their malnourished hope, their defeatism, their “cut and paste” self-confidence.

Your attitude is important, sad woman

Eventually we realize we are “sick.” We are infected with depression and passivity. Our minds cloud and go on auto-pilot, which unfortunately is controlled by the negativity of others.

Finally, we see that attitudes are nothing more than a personal decision. It is something that pulls us out of the barren, desolate place where nothing grows. We remember that we do not deserve to be there. We gather the energy to find what we really need.

Three components of a strong, courageous attitude

Some say that a positive attitude does not solve all our problems. What it will do is annoy many people. With their closed minds and narrow perspectives, they do nothing but set up barbed wire around our dreams and bring storms on our sunny days.

We must remember that our attitude is a personal value that we must work on every day. Because if we expect it to improve itself, the toxic influence of others can actually make it even weaker.

Therefore, it is always good to remember these three elements that maintain, shape and promote a stronger attitude:

  • Commitment: A good attitude requires a serious commitment to ourselves. A commitment to the goals and values we set for ourselves.
  • Self-control: To fulfill that dream, reach that goal, we must take control of our own realities, of the things that happen to us. That is our responsibility. We adopt an active, positive and courageous attitude.

  • The last piece of the puzzle is determination. It is a component that we must not forget, because  life will always put challenges ahead of us every day. We must see these tests as challenges we can learn from and use to grow. Let us be the main characters in our lives.
